Research

A large body of my work has been influenced by my time living in Australia where I became interested in the aboriginal art and fascinated by their use of simple mark making and a limited pallet. With this technique the aboriginal artist could produce amazing works of art.

Looking closer I realised that the images were more than a picture but represented their culture, history, befiefs and their view on creation.

I started to try and reproduce their mark making and the colour pallet and produced a number of pieces with a range of success. the following images are examples of my studies.
Untitled - Oil on canvas - 90cm x 90cm
Untitled - Oil on canvas - 50cm x 165cm
Untitled - Oil on canvas - 50cm x 75cm

It quickly became obvious that although the mark making looked simple, this was far from the truth and it took a great deal of experimentation to achieve the desired result. I looked at ways to use the mark making in a more relevant way to my own cultural background.
